Appetrex Control – the dual action appetite suppressant and fat burner

Appetrex control reviewAppetrex Control weight loss tablets are produced in the USA by GNC. It’s a big company with a good reputation, numerous retail outlets, and a huge online catalogue of products for sale.

Although GNC is primarily a retailer, but it also produces some supplements of its own and Appetrex Control is part of its GNC Total Lean range of products.

Appetrex is targeted to countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK

What is Appetrex Control and how does it Work?

According to GNC their formulation can provide three main benefits:

  • Appetite suppression
  • Fat burning
  • Extra energy

GNC also states the product has been clinically tested and offers proven benefits:

“In a clinical study of 30 healthy adults (who took Appetrex Control one week followed by a placebo one week apart, or vice versa) food intake was reduced by nearly 10% when the subjects took Appetrex Control versus the placebo prior to their first meal at the start of their diet.”

Although we have no reason to doubt GNC’s claims, no information is provided about where or when this study was conducted and it seems likely that it was probably conducted in-house. If so it cannot be relied upon to be unbiased.

Appetrex Control Key Ingredients

Each (2 tablet) serving provides:

  • Thiamin (1.5mg)
  • Riboflavin (1.70)
  • Niacin            (20mg)
  • Vitamin B-6 (2mg)
  • Chromium (120mcg)

The first four ingredients are all known to be beneficial to the metabolism. Chromium has no doubt been included to promote fat burning, but its reputation for doing so far exceeds its capabilities and its use (as a fat burner) has been discredited by The National Union of Health.

The formulation also contains 522mg of a proprietary blend that contains:

  • Black Tea Leaf extract
  • Green Tea Leaf Extract
  • Coffee Bean Extract

Green tea can initiate fat burning, but black tea does not have the same weight loss-providing potential, and unless the coffee bean extract has been taken from green coffee beans it is unlikely to offer much benefit either. All three ingredients are caffeine providers though, so they should help perk tablet users up, but may also cause caffeine-related side effects (jitters, nausea, headaches, heart palpitations etc.)

The other active ingredients are:

  • Yerba Mate Extract (500mg)
  • Grape Skin Extract (210mg)
  • Chrysin (200mg)
  • Ginger Root Extract (200mg)
  • Grape Seed Extract (125mg)
  • Dill Weed Extract (5mg)

There is some evidence that yerba mate may have potential as a fat burner, but further study is required and its inclusion here adds a further dose of caffeine to the mix. The two grape extracts have also probably been included to provide fat burning, but—once again—further study is required. None of the other ingredients are likely to offer much in the way of weight loss benefits.

Usage Instructions

One (2 tablet) serving should be consumed once each day, with water, 30 to 60 minutes before eating lunch or dinner. Tablets should never be taken near to bedtime.

Customer Feedback

Customer feedback shows a mixed response to the product and suggests it may work better for some users than others. Several users also report experiencing nasty side effects.

A few reviews read:

“Love it! Gives me energy, makes me really consider what I’m eating, when I’m eating and how much I’m eating. I’ve had these urges to just eat and eat and eat and this is helping out a lot. I’m drinking much more water & liquids.”

“This made me very itchy and I had to take first thing in the morning – only one – or I couldn’t get my body to relax enough to go to sleep at night. Won’t be taking it any more! “

“Had allergic reaction…..and I’m not allergic to anything…face got red and rash formed on my arms..lasted for 3hrs…..but still felt hungry.”

“I have been using this for quite a while. It has really helped with my appetite. I have been on a diet from my doctor and using these. I have lost 45 lbs in the last 4-5 months.”

Side Effects & Health Issues

Side effects appear to be an issue for some users, so pregnant or nursing mothers should consult a doctor prior to commencing supplementation. The same advice is offered to anybody who is taking medication or has any health issues or concerns. Supplementation should be ceased two weeks before any scheduled surgical operations.

Purchasing Options & Considerations

Appetrex Control can be purchased directly from GNC, in-store or online. The RRP is $39.99, but this is usually cut to $29.99, and paid-up GNC Gold Card members can benefit from a further $10 reduction.

Appetrex Control is also available from Amazon and a few online retailers, including Drugstore.com and Nutrition Market. Prices can vary considerably from one supplier to the next, but Amazon is usually the cheapest option and the price compares well to that paid by GNC Gold Card members.

The Bottom Line

GNC is reputable company, but its true expertise is as a retailer, not as a supplement manufacturer, so Appetrex Control tablets do not compare well with many competing products in our opinion. The blend does contains a few promising ingredients, but it also contains many that add little of benefit and may even work against some of the better ingredients.

Despite the product’s many flaws, it does appear to work for some people. Unfortunately customer feedback indicates it also fails many users and can cause side effects, so Appetrex Control is a bit of a hit-and-miss product that may be worth a shot, but is a risky bet because of the lack of a money back guarantee.
